Experience Modifies Neural Basis of Language: Evidence from Early-Blind Children
نویسندگان
چکیده
Humans are hypothesized to have evolved brain regions that enable them to acquire language. Surprisingly, recent research with blind adults suggests that brain regions in the occipital lobe, which evolved for vision, can take on language functions. We examined when and why occipital areas develop language functions. We used fMRI to measure brain activity during story comprehension in nine blind and twenty sighted children (ages 4-17 years). In two control conditions, children listened to speech in foreign languages and short music clips. We found that occipital brain regions respond to story comprehension more than to foreign languages or music. A language-sensitive response was present in blind children as young as 4 years old, who have not yet learned Braille. We conclude that in the absence of visual input, occipital brain regions can take on language functions during childhood language acquisition.

Absence of visual experience modifies the neural basis of numerical thinking.
In humans, the ability to reason about mathematical quantities depends on a frontoparietal network that includes the intraparietal sulcus (IPS). How do nature and nurture give rise to the neurobiology of numerical cognition? We asked how visual experience shapes the neural basis of numerical thinking by studying numerical cognition in congenitally blind individuals. Blind (n = 17) and blindfold...
متن کاملA Systematic Review of the Effectiveness of Early Intervention and the Role of Parents in Language Development of Hearing Loss Children
Objectives: Deaf and hard-of-hearing children are slow in language development, and language deficits are common in hearing-impaired children. Here, all areas of the language, including syntax, morphology, phonology, semantic and pragmatic, are involved, and this leads to a deficiency in reading and academic skills. Evidence shows that through early intervention, we can minimize or eliminate pr...
متن کاملTheory of mind and its neural mechanisms: A case study of Kurdish-Persian congenitally blind children in Ilam city
Introduction: Theory of mind is one of the most important aspects of cognitive faculty. The theory of mind is impaired in individuals who suffer from mental disorders like autistic children. The ‘autistic-like’ behaviors also have been reported in the congenitally blind children. This study was conducted to examine the presence or absence of theory of mind and its function in congen...
متن کاملBeyond the 30-Million-Word Gap: Children's Conversational Exposure Is Associated With Language-Related Brain Function.
Children's early language exposure impacts their later linguistic skills, cognitive abilities, and academic achievement, and large disparities in language exposure are associated with family socioeconomic status (SES). However, there is little evidence about the neural mechanisms underlying the relation between language experience and linguistic and cognitive development. Here, language experie...
متن کاملEmotional Face Recognition in Children With Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder: Evidence From Event Related Gamma Oscillation
Introduction: Children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have some impairment in emotional relationship which can be due to problems in emotional processing. The present study investigated neural correlates of early stages of emotional face processing in this group compared with typically developing children using the Gamma Band Activity (GBA). Methods: A total of 19 childre...
